Degerfors IF have been dealt a significant blow after midfielder Juhani Pikkarainen suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during training last week, the club has confirmed on their official website.
An MRI scan revealed damage to the anterior cruciate ligament, ending any hope of a swift return. Pikkarainen will now undergo a rehabilitation programme before being cleared to return to action — a process that typically takes the better part of a year, meaning his 2026 season is over.
According to Degerfors IF's official website, the club is hopeful that Pikkarainen will make a successful recovery, though no specific timeline for his return has been given.
Degerfors IF currently compete in Superettan, the second tier of Swedish football, making every available player a crucial resource in the fight for promotion or survival. Losing Pikkarainen to such a serious injury is a notable setback for the squad as the season continues into its second half.
ACL injuries are among the most serious a footballer can face, typically requiring surgery followed by an extended spell on the sidelines. The Finnish-named Pikkarainen will hope to return fully fit and ready to contribute when pre-season preparations begin ahead of the 2027 campaign.
