Serie A club Genoa are closing in on the signing of Mjällby AIF defender Elliot Stroud after significantly raising their transfer bid to approximately 28 million Swedish kronor (around £2 million), according to Italian transfer expert Nicolo Schira, as reported by Sydöstran.
The Italian club's initial offer stood at just 17 million kronor, but that figure has now been substantially increased in what appears to be a determined push to secure the Swedish defender's signature. Schira reports that a contract running until 2030, with an option for a further year, has already been prepared for the player.
Perhaps most significantly, the same report claims that only minor details now stand between both clubs and a completed deal — suggesting the transfer could be finalised imminently.
The story first broke when Fotbollskanalen revealed Genoa's initial interest, a report that was subsequently confirmed by Mjällby's sporting director Hans Larsson. At that time, however, Larsson played down expectations, stating that "nothing was close" and that the two clubs were "still some way apart" in their valuations.
The gap between those two positions appears to have narrowed dramatically since then. Genoa, one of Italian football's most historic clubs and currently competing in Serie A, clearly view Stroud as a priority target for their summer recruitment.
For Mjällby AIF, a club from the small coastal town of Sölvesborg in southern Sweden, landing a fee in the region of 28 million kronor would represent a remarkable piece of business and a significant statement of the club's ability to develop talent capable of attracting top European interest.
